Official Rules of Registration and Competition
The 2880 Film Blitz is a competitive event in which participating filmmaking teams each write, shoot and edit an original short film in a weekend of 2,880 minutes (48 hours, or two days). Teams that successfully submit their films before the end of this time period have their films screened before a cinema audience and are eligible to compete for awards and prizes. The two-day period will begin at the start of the official 2880 Film Blitz countdown clock at the Event Launch on the evening of Friday, June 20, 2008, and end when the clock has counted down to “0” on the evening of Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Screening Gala.
GENERAL GUIDELINES:
To be eligible to participate in the Film Blitz, interested individuals must assemble filmmaking teams of not less than four persons and not more than ten.
Each team is responsible for finding and arranging production and editing equipment, as well as locating and engaging actors and musicians.
Each team must incorporate the 2880 Film Blitz secret theme into their film. This theme will be revealed to registered participants at the Event Launch.
Submitted films must contain only original images and music.
To be eligible for competition at the Screening Gala (see “Dates & Places” below), completed films must be received by 2880 officials at the Screening Gala location prior to the end of the countdown. Those received after that time will be screened out of competition.
Films can be made in English or French. In the spirit of embracing and respecting our diverse audience, and the filmmakers participating in the 2880 Film Blitz, we strongly encourage submitted films be sub-titled in one of the official languages, if and wherever appropriate.
HOW TO ENTER:
Each team must submit their registration form (from www.2880.ca and duly completed) during the Registration Period (see Dates & Places below). No payment need be made at the time of entry submission. Duplicate submissions, or submissions that have variations of the same names will be discarded.
After the Registration Period has ended, twelve competing teams will be chosen from the team entries by a random drawing from the submitted entry forms. The lottery will be officiated by a representative of the 2880 Film Blitz, at the Lottery Event (see “Dates & Places” below).
At least one member from each team that entered must be present at the Lottery Event with a valid piece of photo ID, to complete the registration process.
After the lottery draw, each of the selected teams will pay a registration fee of $175 (non-refundable). Payment MUST BE MADE on the evening of the Lottery by cash (or cheque, payable to DOC). Failure to pay the registration fee on the evening of the Lottery will result in disqualification. Another drawing will be made from the remaining entries to find a replacement.
Once a team has submitted its entry form and paid the registration fee, changes to the team’s personnel can only be made at Team Check-in, on the evening of the Event Launch (see “Dates & Places” below). At this time, teams may add or drop team members. Note that there is a $15 add/substitution fee that must be paid at that time. Photo ID will be required for each team member at Team Check-in.
Free admittance to the GALA SCREENING will be granted to registered team members (as well as two registered actors per team) upon presentation of photo ID at the Gala Screening venue. Any non-registered team member or actor will have to purchase a ticket at the box office.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
The maximum length of a finished film is five minutes, including titles, head and tail credits and any music on black. There is no minimum length for submitted films. Any film that exceeds this time limit will not be eligible for competition during the Screening Gala.
Finished film masters must be delivered in Mini DV or DVCAM formats, NTSC. Films delivered in any other format WILL NOT be screened. The audio signal must be recorded on two readable tracks, and can either be stereo or the same mono signal on tracks 1 and 2. Submitted tapes must be new and otherwise unused and contain only the film that is intended for screening – no other material (i.e. rushes, versions or excerpts). The tape must be rolled back to the head in preparation for screening, with 30 seconds of black preceding the first frame of sound or picture, and the starting cue time must be labelled on the tape and tape cover, along with your TEAM NAME and FILM TITLE.
LEGALITIES
All delivered tapes become the property of 2880 Film Blitz. Filmmakers should ensure that they retain a copy of the submitted film. Copyright of the film is retained by the filmmakers, but they cede to 2880 Film Blitz and DOC the right to use any and all submitted material for non-commercial purposes, i.e. promotional and publicity of the 2880 Film Blitz.
The Jury’s decisions are final – in the event of a tie, the Event Director will cast the deciding vote. Prizes are awarded to teams, or their designated representatives. Non-cash prizes are not exchangeable, transferable or redeemable for cash.
DOC and 2880 Film Blitz staff and judges are not responsible for any errors, omissions, or claims of damage of any kind by any party, due to actions or inactions by the filmmakers, relating to the filmmaking process or the content of the submitted films.
Filmmakers are reminded that they are completely responsible for ensuring that they follow all rules and regulations of 2880 Film Blitz, and in the event of any disagreement, the decision of the Event Director prevails and is final.
By signing and submitting the registration form, all teams agree to the non-exclusive distribution agreement written on the form itself that gives the 2880 Film Blitz Organization the non-exclusive distribution rights to include all submitted 2880 Film Blitz films onto compilation DVDs that will be sold by the 2880 Film Blitz for the sole purpose of raising funds towards future 2880 Film Blitz Events, exclusively.
